Who May Use the Library / Borrowing Materials:

The library and its facilities are open to students, faculty and staff and the general public.

Students, faculty, and staff must complete the application form available at the Circulation Desk, or from this site, in order to borrow material.   The application form downloaded from this site must be signed and sent, or brought, to the library for validation.  Students should present their student ID card at the circulation desk.  Once a library barcode is added, the ID Card will also serve as a library cards.

Full borrowing privileges are extended to all full and part-time NVCC students, faculty and staff. This allows those borrowers to check out up to 10 items at a time (compact disc borrowing is limited to a total of 5 at a time and video borrowing is limited to a total of 3), use Reserve materials in the library, and request Interlibrary Loans.

Under a reciprocal agreement with UCONN/Waterbury, Teikyo Post, and the Connecticut State University system, students from those schools are granted full borrowing privileges at the NVCC library and NVCC students have full borrowing privileges there.

A public borrower (not a student, or faculty/staff) can obtain a library card if proper picture identification is presented. Public borrowers are limited to borrowing books only (up to 4 at one time) and are not allowed access to Reserve materials and may not request Interlibrary loans from this library.

We do not accept library cards from public libraries or any other college libraries except as noted above.

Library Policy on Computer Use:

Access to the library computers, including the Internet, is provided as a learning and research tool; please use it as such. Playing games on library workstations is not allowed. Please be considerate; others may be waiting.
Viewing of objectionable material (violent or degrading in nature) on Internet workstations is unacceptable at NVCC.

Use of any software other than that already provided at the workstations, is strictly forbidden! Use campus computer labs for such applications.

Item Loan Periods:

Books circulate for 3 weeks and may be renewed once.
CDs circulate  for 1 week and may be renewed once.
Videos/DVDs circulate for 3 days and may be renewed once.
Audiocassettes go out for 1 week and may be renewed once.
Reference Materials and Periodicals do not circulate (faculty excepted).
Reserve Materials are mostly limited to use within the library and only to students.

Students will be mailed three overdue notices and then a bill for non-returned items.  A $10 processing fee will be added to the replacement charges.  Library privileges are blocked and a hold placed which will prevent registering and receiving an official transcript until the matter is cleared.

A patron may pay for the lost item plus the processing fee by coming to the library and paying by check or cash. The patron's record will then be cleared and library privileges are restored.

If a borrower returns an item within 6 months after paying for it, a full refund will be made. Since the procedure is somewhat complicated, it may take some time to process the refund.

Distance Learners at NVCC:

Online students must complete the online application and mail or e-mail it to the library (libcirc@nvcc.commnet.edu ).  Student ID # and e-mail address must be included on the application.
Application will be processed within 1 business day of receipt.

On-line students will receive their library barcode number and expiration date through the mail.  Expiration dates expire at the end of the semester and students need to contact the circulation supervisor for renewal.

On-line students may also come to the library to receive their barcode, which will be placed on the back of their student ID card.

On-line students may call the circulation desk to request books and other resources sent to them through the mail if they are unable to visit the library.  Materials need to be returned by the due date on the item.  If mailing materials back to the library, student must pay all shipping charges.

Library Instruction Policies:

The instructor or his/her designee should be present at all times during the instruction.

The role of the librarian is to direct students to the appropriate catalogs, web pages, and databases for their research and to provide instructions on proper searching techniques.

The content and pace of each individual session is governed by the librarian and based on input that is requested of the faculty member on the Library Instruction request form.

It is not the responsibility of the librarian to monitor student participation in the lesson.

Instructors, not librarians, are the authorities on the actual writing of any assignment, including having the final say over what books and articles are the most appropriate for that assignment, how to write thesis statements, how to prepare proper documentation, including the works cited page, how to proofread a paper, etc.

All positive and negative feedback about the quality of the library instruction should be brought directly to the attention of the Library Director.
