Adding PowerPoint 2000 Presentations to WebCT:
To begin, be certain that Winzip is loaded on your PC. You can get an evaluation copy of the software from the Internet.
Moving PowerPoint presentations to WebCT:
1) Convert your PowerPoint presentation to PowerPoint 2000. (This version is super-easy to use in WebCT.)
2) From the File menu in PPT, select Save As Web Page. Create a new folder to save the presentation into. After the save is complete, close PPT.
3) Open the folder that the Web Pages were saved into. Notice there is one single file and one folder (with more files inside). Close the folder.
4) To compress the folder for quick uploading into WebCT, right-click on the folder. Select “Add To foldername.zip”. This will do some ‘behind the scenes’ compressing and will create a zipped file with the same folder name. The zipped file is what is uploaded to WebCT.
5) Open your course in WebCT. Click the File Manager button. Be sure to click the Course Files link in your WebCT (this means any uploaded files will be placed in the Course Files folder in WebCT.
6) Click the Upload button. In the next window, click the Browse button and highlight the zipped file you created in Step 4 above. Click the Open button. In the WebCT window, click Continue.
7) A prompt will show in the lower window indicating the file was uploaded “Successfully.” Click Continue. Click the Refresh icon on the top toolbar and click the “Course Files” link again to list the files in your course. Your zipped file should appear in the right window.
8) Now we need to “unzip” the zipped file. Place a checkmark in the right window next to the name of the zipped file. Then click Unzip in the lower window. In the next window, use the down arrow to select the Course Files folder to indicate the location for the unzipped files. Then click Continue.
9) An Unzip Report will display indicating “Successful”. Click Continue. Click the Refresh icon on the top toolbar. Another folder will now appear in the Course Files list. If you click the link for the new folder, you will see a folder list beneath the unzipped folder and a single file will list in the right window. The single file is used to link to an icon in WebCT to display the presentation.
10) Click the Home button. Then click Organize Icons. Click the Add button to add a new icon.
11) Click the Single Page button. Three boxes will appear. The first box requires a title for the icon. The second box requires you to find a suitable icon. You can use the WebCT Built-in icons to choose an icon from. The third box requires that you “pick” the single file in the unzipped folder with the presentation to associate the icon with. Then click Add.
12) You will be returned to the screen of icons. Click the new icon to test the presentation. Your first slide will appear. Clicking Forward will advance the slides, etc.
13) Across the bottom of the slides are 4-5 buttons.
OUTLINE button 1 – displays or hides the outline of the presentation
OUTLINE button 2 – will collapse or expand the text of the outline.
Important! Have students expand the outline in order to print the presentation. Then right-clicking on the outline will allow you to select Print. This saves paper!!!!
Slide 1 of # of slides – use arrows to advance/retrace the slides. IF a student needs a picture of something on a slide, right-click on the particular slide to print it (only one slide will print).
FULL SCREEN Slide Show – the last little button in the lower right corner will let you display a slide show. This is the best way to bring your presentation to the classroom!
14) Click the Close button to close the presentation. This will return you to the icons in WebCT.
Please Note: There are various ways of linking icons to presentations. You may want to use a ToolPage (an icon that points to a page of more icons), or you may want to use Path. What is presented here is about the easiest way of all to accomplish uploading PowerPoints. The key is to keep organized!
