This document reviews the steps necessary to configure Outlook Express for receiving e-mail at your home computer.
Faculty and staff e-mail accounts at NVCC reside on an MS Exchange Server which sends and receives Internet e-mail and internal campus e-mail. To send and receive both types of e-mail on your home computer requires that Outlook Express be configured for two mail accounts.
Mail Account #1: to receive Internet e-mail
1. Open Outlook Express by double-clicking the icon on the desktop.2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the Mail tab. Click the Add button and select Mail. The Internet Connection Wizard will open. Follow the instructions to establish a connection with a mail server.
3. Enter a display name, and then enter your e-mail address. Click Next to go to the next step.
4. For our e-mail accounts, select POP3 server. For the next fields, please note:
If your e-mail address is: someone@nvctc5.commnet.edu, your Incoming mail server is nvctc5.commnet.edu. The Outgoing mail server is mail.commnet.edu.
1. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above. This completes the steps for configuring the two mail accounts. If you have additional e-mail accounts, such as AOL, Earthlink, etc, you may add these as accounts as well. In that case, all of your e-mail will appear from all e-mail accounts.2. Enter your display name differently for the second account. In the next screen your e-mail address will use the following syntax:
someone@nvctc8.commnet.edu
(someone is your network username, such as JSmith)
3. Select POP3 server. For the next fields, use the following infomation:
Incoming mail server: nvctc8.commnet.edu
4. Again enter your account name (the name before the @ in the e-mail address, which is your network username). Then enter the password for your network account. Click Next and then Finish.Outgoing mail server: mail.commnet.edu
When opening Outlook Express, click the Send/Recv button on the toolbar. Your e-mail will then start to appear.
To keep mail available at both home and school, each account's mail properties much be set to "leave mail on server". To do this, return to the Tools menu, select Accounts and click the Mail tab. Highlight the account, then select Properties. Click the Advanced tab (shown below), and check the box "Leave a copy of messages on server). Click Apply and OK. Repeat for the next mail account.
