WebCT News and Training

During the first week of April, our office will begin training faculty (full or part-time) in the use of WebCT.  This product is catching on at NVCC and our 400-user license is nearly consumed with student accounts.  Faculty using the software are raving about it’s ease of use and all the tools it provides for tracking student progress.

Plans are to purchase a campus-wide license for the Fall term.  WebCT interfaces easily with Banner.  Student ID’s, names and courses can be loaded directly from Banner to WebCT.  That means a faculty member can create an online course or web-supported course very easily and have it “populated” automatically with the students enrolled – a real time-saver!

Training for faculty will start Wednesday, April 5.  Signups are available at this link:  http://www.nv2.commnet.edu/csv99/Training.htm

Each session is approximately 2 hours.  Needless to say, you will learn a lot!

Any faculty member considering the use of WebCT for Fall courses needs to begin preparation now.  A couple of hints are in order:

  • Learn an html editor, such as FrontPage, DreamWeaver, and even Word (save as html).

  • Begin converting your student handouts to html format.  Create an “organization” of your web materials.

  • Learn WinZip.  This utility is used to upload course files to WebCT.

  • Check with your textbook publisher.  Does your publisher provide WebCT “cartridges” that plug into WebCT?  If so, a lot of course materials will be readily available without having to “re-create the wheel.”  (Prentice Hall is a good example.)

LongFileNames

Some issues have developed recently with naming files with long names.  Please check the following link for “the pitfalls of using long file names . . .”
