Here's a Tip for Word 97/2000:

Single- and double-spacing (in Word). Quickly change to double-spacing by highlighting the text to change and press CTRL-2. To change back to single-spacing, press CTRL-1. For a space-and-a-half, use CTRL-5. For more finite control over line spacing, go to the Format menu, select Paragraph and click the Indents And Spacing tab. You'll control spacing within a paragraph, as well as before and after it.

How To's

June's Newsletter focuses on How To's.  The web links provided in this month's newsletter will show how to:

  • Check your PC for viruses and keep your virus definitions updated

  • Configure your home computer to receive e-mail using Outlook Express

  • Using Shortcut Keys

BorisViruses are always a threat.  Check the following link (print the pages if necessary) for all the information required to keep your computer virus-free.  Every user needs to be prepared for the inevitable new strain or mutation..  Are you prepared for the next outbreak?  Check your PC now!

http://www.nv2.commnet.edu/csv99/avirus/fighting_viruses.htm

Faculty and staff who would like to receive their e-mail at home can configure Outlook Express to receive e-mail from multiple accounts.  When Outlook Express is opened, e-mail from all sources will come into one place on your computer.  NVCC e-mail comes from an Internet e-mail account and MS Exchange e-mail account.  Again, configuring Outlook Express to open both e-mail accounts can guarantee that all your e-mail will be available.

Read (and print, if necessary) the pages at the following link.  Follow the steps carefully.

Keyboard shortcuts make quick work of repetitive tasks like printing, or copying and pasting.  Learn some keyboard commands to do these tasks rather than reaching for the mouse.  Click here to go to a page of keyboard shortcuts available in Office 2000:

Power Issues

Summertime brings with it the usual thunderstorms and air-conditioning demands.  Our IT staff have noted that after a violent thunderstorm where the campus has lost power, power surges and spikes have taken their toll on computer hard drives, power supplies or motherboards.  Also our staff spends 1 to 2 days following a violent storm just repairing damaged equipment.

We would like to remind you to:

  •  turn off your computer at the end of each day
  • turn off your computer at the power strip

That way, you'll be conserving power, and at the same time, saving your computer from possible damage.
