What
is CIS?
Computer Information Systems is a program of study for students
interested in computers and business. Courses in CIS include computer
related courses such as programming, systems analysis and design,
and networking along with accounting, finance, management and marketing
courses.
What
computer skills do I need to have to enroll in a CIS program?
More important than the skills you have is the interest you have
with computers. Are you someone who spends time reading about or
working on computers? Are you’re interested in learning more about
databases, sharing information, programming, and systems design?
Then CIS could be a good choice for you.
Do
I have a choice of courses, or can I focus on a particular area
within CIS?
The CIS program allows some flexibility in your choice of courses
so that you may focus in one of four areas. The four focus areas
are:
Business Programming - prepares the student for
work within a business environment
Client/Server Systems - explores databases in a
client/server environment
Microcomputer Network Administration – teaches
local area network design, network management, installation, service
and support
Object-Oriented Programming – instruction includes
JAVA, C++, Visual Basic programming, and client/server systems
What
will I study?
Depending on the focus area you choose in CIS, courses you take
may include:
Introduction to Computers
Visual Basic I and II
C++ object-oriented programming
Database Design
Network Essentials
Network Systems
Service and Support of LANs
JAVA
Client/Server Systems
Information Systems
Co-op Work Experience

What
sort of jobs can I expect to get after earning a CIS certificate
or associate degree?
CIS graduates are prepared to work in a business career or a technology
career. In a business environment, you may have the responsibility
of designing, developing or supporting business-related software
and systems. Or you may be supporting computer networks, installing
operating system software and supporting end-users with Helpdesk
management skills. The role of the Internet plays an important role
in all types of organizations and CIS graduates can identify and
develop ways of using the Internet to be competitive in a worldwide
economy.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, CIS employment is
expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations
through the year 2012. Check the website for the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
